KTM AG (the former KTM Sportmotorcycle AG) is an Austrian motorcycle and sports car manufacturer owned by KTM Industries AG and Bajaj Auto. It was formed in 1992 but traces its foundation to as early as 1934. Today, KTM AG is the parent company of the KTM Group.

KTM is known for its off-road motorcycles (Enduro, Motocross, and Supermoto). Since the late 1990s, it has expanded into street motorcycle production and developing sports cars – namely the X-Bow. In 2015, KTM sold almost as many street motorcycles as off-road bikes. Production of the KTM sports car X-BOW started in 2007.

KTM RC 390 Overview

KTM RC 390 that gets all the goodies like – ride-by-wire tech, slipper clutch and a larger 320 mm front disc brake for improved stopping power. The bike also gets ECU-based acceleration, which has improved the throttle response as well. In fact, the new RC 390 gets a side-mounted exhaust unlike the underbelly exhaust of the previous model. According to KTM officials, the new aluminum exhaust muffler has been added to meet the stringent Euro 4 emission norms in 2016 and the same has been brought to India in 2017.

KTM RC 390 Launched at Rs 2.25 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). KTM RC 390 is a fully faired sports bike based on the Duke 390 naked motorcycle. The flagship model features slightly modified chassis resulting in improved ride quality. The RC 390 is built around a steel trellis frame, similar to the one in the Duke version and the front wheels get 43mm inverted forks while the rear gets a monoshock that is directly linked to the alloy swingarm. Powering RC 390 is a single-cylinder 373.2cc engine which manages to churn out 44PS and 35Nm of torque. On the safety front, the company offers ABS as part of standard equipment. Besides, the bike also gets slipper clutch, new exhaust that abides by Euro IV emission norms, automatic headlamp, new MRF tyres, new rear view mirrors, adjustable clutch and brake levers etc among various others.

2017 KTM RC 390 was recently launched in the US for $5499 (INR 3.54 lakhs Approx). Apart from the price difference, every other feature remains the same as the Indian spec model launched back in January 2017. The shade even stays same for both the countries.

The higher price in America is due to the import tax by US authorities, seen in the same way in India with bikes that follow SKD (semi knocked down), CKD (completely knocked down) and CBU (completely built unit). India is the manufacturing hub for KTM Duke and RC Series motorcycles (125, 200, 250, 390).

They even have the 2017 KTM Duke 390 on sale in the USA for $5299 (INR 3.40 lakhs Approx). Indian market currently benefits from the local production as RC 390 costs INR 2,34,300 and Duke 390 costs INR 2,29,500 in the country. 2017 RC 390 is powered by a refined, BS4 version of the familiar 373.2 cc motor, producing 43.5 PS at 9000 rpm and 36 Nm at 7000 rpm.

The engine comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox that gets slipper clutch for stress-free aggressive downshifts. Apart from fuel injection and water cooling, RC 390 comes with ride by wire for the best ever throttle response. 2017 variant got more bulk on its body through the side exhaust, making the motorcycle good for 170 kg of wet weight and just 9.5 liters of fuel carrying capacity.

The seating position favors track riding as the aerodynamic machine can sprint from 0-100 kmph in around 5.7 seconds. The claimed top speed is about 179 kmph while 2017 version gets the new UV resistant paint for safe ground level parking. Being a single cylinder motorcycle, 2017 KTM RC390 has no direct rival except twin cylinder options like Yamaha R3 and Kawasaki Ninja 300.

Built around the steel trellis frame, RC 390 is a fully faired version of its naked sibling, Duke 390. Alterations are made to the chassis offering improve ride quality. The bike without a doubt is one of the best looking options in its segment featuring an orange colored frame that reinforces its sporty character. In front, it gets twin projector headlamps, daytime running lights and a windshield. The angular shaped ORVMs come with integrated turn indicators and there is no seat for pillion, but KTM has further cushioned the rider seat.
